The work session is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., with the business meeting slated to start at 6 p.m.

Agendas for both meetings can be found on the district website by clicking on BoardDocs under the School Board tab.

The meetings will be streamed live on the district’s YouTube channel.

Friday Schedule Update

District administrators, school principals and others have done a great deal of work over the past several months collecting testing and attendance data and gathering feedback from various stakeholders about the Friday schedule. The school board spent more than five hours on Monday, Jan. 30, reviewing and discussing the information. The board is expected to make a decision about the Friday schedule after it takes public comment at its business meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

VMS Ensembles to Play the Capitol

The Vernal Middle School Jazz Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble have been invited to play at the Utah State Capitol on Monday, Feb. 6, as part of Utah School Boards Association Day on the Hill. The Jazz Ensemble performs under the direction of AJ Nicoll, while the Percussion Ensemble performs under the direction of Elaine Koons. Students in both ensembles put in extra time to learn to play their instruments and practice together.

VMS Fine Arts Showcase

Vernal Middle School will host a Fine Arts Showcase on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6:30-8 p.m. The showcase will feature performances by the school’s bands, instrumental ensembles and choirs. Dual Immersion students from VMS will also sing a traditional Mexican folk song with the choir, and VMS art students will have their work displayed in the foyer for people to see.

State of the District Event

The Uintah Schools Foundation will host a State of the District event on Monday, Feb. 13, at the Uintah Conference Center. The event begins at 8 a.m. and will include a presentation by Superintendent Rick Woodford, as well as performances by the Uintah High Jazz Band, the Uintah High Choir, and the Maeser/Discovery Elementary School Combined Choir. There is no cost to attend and everyone in the community is invited.

Maeser Elementary Art Showcase

Maeser Elementary will hold an Art Showcase event Feb. 13-16 during school hours. More than 500 pieces of student artwork will be on display for students, staff and parents to enjoy. Each grade will be showcased in their class area. Visitors must check in at the school office before going to view the art.

Celebrations

Congratulations to USD instructional coach Bekah Jones! She has been named the 2023 Outstanding Coach by the Utah Coalition for Educational Technology.

The award honors an educational technology coach, library technology coach, instructional coach, or curriculum coach who demonstrates outstanding coaching and leadership in implementing technology to support teachers to effectively use technology with students to engage them in learning.

Jones will receive her award on March 14, during the first day of UCET’s annual conference in Provo.

Kudos to USD bus driver Jordan Robbins! When she asked the students on her route if they wanted to make Valentines for seniors in the community, 47 of them responded. The students range in age from kindergarteners to high school seniors.

The cards are being donated to the 8th Annual Cards for Kids at Heart event, which seeks to make Valentine's Day a bit brighter for senior citizens and residents of skilled nursing facilities in the Uintah Basin. Great job, Jordan, and thanks to your students and their families for showing kindness toward others!

The Uintah High FFA chapter did well at the Area 6 Leadership Development Event held Monday at the Uintah Conference Center. Emerson Hackford took 1st in Prepared Public Speaking, Terilyn Williams took 1st in Creed Speaking, and the Conduct of Chapter Meetings Team took 1st place, all qualifying to compete at the State FFA Convention.

The Conduct of Chapter Meetings Team members are Garrett Speir, Kade Richens, Terilyn Williams, Holden Thomas, Tyrek Christensen, Hadleigh Wall, Braxton Foote, Genny Lee Huber, and Cooper Cook. They are coached by Uintah FFA Chapter President Aysia Massey and Vice President Kamlyn Williams.

Kamlyn Williams finished 2nd in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest today, and Drew Huber was the 1st Alternate in the Farm Bureau Discussion Meet.

The following Uintah FFA members are applying for the Utah FFA State Degree, the second highest degree that can be earn in FFA: Jesse Aguilar, Hadley Cook, Hadlie Horrocks, Quinton Huber, Blake Holmes, Kamlyn Williams, Jodie Speir, Emerson Hackford, Audie Christensen, and Houston Harrison.

Hadlie Horrocks qualified through Area competition to be a candidate for Star State Farmer Award; Quinton McKee qualified through Area competition to be a candidate for Star State Placement Award; and Jodie Speir qualified through Area competition to be a candidate for Star State Agribusiness. They will all compete at the Utah FFA Convention.

Aubree Harrison is the chapter candidate for Star Greenhand at the state level, Drew Huber is the chapter candidate for Star Greenhand Placement at the state level, and Dason Lister is the chapter candidate for Star Greenhand in Agribusiness at the state level.

The chapter's Area Proficiency Award winners who are going on to the state convention are: Quinton McKee in Dairy Production Placement, Hadlie Horrocks in Goat Production, Isabel Owens in Diversified Horticulture, and Hadley Cook in Agriculture Processing.

The Utah FFA Convention is March 9-10 at Utah State University in Logan.

The Uintah U'ettes competed on Monday in the 5A State Quarterfinals at the UCCU Center in Orem. The team qualified for Wednesday's semifinal round but did not make it to the finals. The U'ettes will hold their annual Drill Review on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m. in the Main Gym at UHS.

Weekend Events

The Uintah High Girls Basketball Team is on the road tonight at Payson High School for a region game against the Lions. The Uintah High Student Broadcasting Team will stream games played in the main gym live on their Facebook page. The sophomore game began at 3:30 p.m. The JV game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. with the varsity game tipping off at 7 p.m.

The Uintah High Boys Wrestling Team and Uintah High Girls Wrestling Team are competing today and tomorrow at Divisionals at Tooele High School. The outcome of Divisionals will determine the teams’ placement as they head into the 5A State Tournament, which will take place Feb. 17-18 at the UCCU Center on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem.

The Uintah High Boys Swim Team and Uintah High Girls Swim Team will compete at the Region 7 Championships on Saturday in Heber City. Races begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Wasatch Aquatic Center. The boys team enters the meet undefeated in region this season. The meet will be streamed live at https://youtu.be/q3_YryAZz-o.
