We are still more than a week away from the next Uintah School Board meetings on Dec. 13 at the district office. Agendas for the board’s regularly scheduled work session and business meeting will be posted late next week.

This week’s update is a compilation of some of the awesome things our students have done since just before the Thanksgiving break through this week, with a look ahead to a few weekend events.

On Nov. 20, Maeser Elementary fifth grader Brooklee Deets and her parents landed at the school in a Classic Air Medical helicopter to cheers from Brooklee’s classmates and school staff. The Maeser Cubs raised more than $6,700 as part of a school-wide project to help offset Brooklee’s medical expenses. She was diagnosed with cancer in September. Great job, Cubs!

Uintah High’s Jazz Band – Pandemonium – performed well at the Utah Valley University Ice Breaker Jazz Festival on Nov. 20. They received excellent feedback during a clinic with the judge, preparing them for future events. Fourteen UHS Band students are in Richfield today and tomorrow for a performance in the Utah Rural Schools Honor Band. The students are Gavin Bain, Anthony Bristol, Owen Carbine, John Daley, Tyler Franklin, Breanna Helm, Kristina Herbert, Elisabeth Hirschi, Aeris Larsen, Quinn Meanea, Arwen O’Brien, Jordan Teague, Kloee Thomas, and Pierson Watkins.

Congratulations to the four Uintah High student-athletes who received All-State honors last month! Sophomore Emma Glenn was named to the 4A Girls Soccer All-State 2nd Team. Seniors Zoey Glenn and Jessica McKeachnie each received 4A Girls Soccer All-State Honorable Mention nods. Senior Lindsey Stewart also earned an Honorable Mention nod for 4A All-State Volleyball.

Congratulations as well to the five cast members from Uintah High Theatre’s production of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical on their nominations for the 14th Annual Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards! Benson Baumgarten is nominated for Best Actor; Olivia Christensen is nominated for Best Actress; Cade Marshall is nominated for Best Supporting Actor; Cecilia Benjamin is nominated for Best Supporting Actress; and Shayna Cook is nominated for Best Cameo. The Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards will be held in May at the Eccles Theatre in Salt Lake City.

Finally, congratulations to Uintah U’ettes soloists Kenzi Brown, Macey Miller, and Kenzie Franks on their outstanding performances Thursday night at the Utah Valley University Solo Competition. Brown placed 2nd in 4A Jazz and Miller placed 5th in 4A Jazz, while Franks placed 4th in 4A Contemporary. The U’ettes are scheduled to take the floor as a team today at UVU for their first competition of the year. They’re performance times are 2:54 p.m. (Pom); 3:36 p.m. (Military); 5:41 p.m. (Dance); and 8:04 p.m. (Show). Good luck, U’ettes!

The Uintah High Cheer Team is also headed to their first competition of the year. They’ll perform three times tomorrow at Bountiful High School – 8:32 a.m. (Timeout Dance); 10:15 a.m. (Timeout Cheer); and 2:06 p.m. (Show Routine). Good luck, Cheer!

The Uintah High Boys Wrestling Team is competing in the Layton Invitational Tournament today and tomorrow, while the Uintah High Girls Wrestling Team is competing in the Farmington Invitational today and tomorrow. Good luck to both teams!

The Uintah High Boys Basketball Team is in Box Elder County this weekend for the annual Bear River Winter Classic. The Utes’ varsity team won their first game Thursday night. They take on the Ben Lomond Scots tonight at 6:30 p.m. and the Bear River Bears on Saturday at 4 p.m. The games are being streamed live on www.brlive.com

The Uintah High Girls Basketball Team is hosting the Shanon Johnson Classic this weekend. The Utes’ varsity team rebounded from a Game 1 loss to Emery last night by beating Manti this afternoon. They take on the Fruita High Wildcats tomorrow at 1 p.m. in their final game of the tournament. Games are being streamed live on www.channelv6.com. Tickets are available at www.gofan.co. A schedule of the Utes’ remaining freshman, sophomore and JV games in the Shanon Johnson Classic can be found on the Uintah High Athletics Facebook page.
