During the business meeting, the board celebrated Uintah High juniors Ryanna Baldwin and Lily Carlson and Discovery Elementary 5th grader Paxon Massey.

Baldwin is the first UHS student to earn a seat with the All-State Orchestra. The ensemble selects the top 1 percent of all Utah orchestra students annually for a special performance at Abravanel Hall.

Carlson’s graphite drawing “Sisterly Innocence” earned a 3rd Congressional District Award honorable mention, a Utah Senate Award honorable mention, and a Utah State Board of Education Purchase Award at the 52nd Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show. The show is on display at the Springville Museum of Art through March 22. Massey finished 2nd in the Elementary Division of the Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge and 3rd overall. He was able to generate a 1.05% net return on his hypothetical $100,000 investment during the 10-week simulation of Wall Street trading. Markets were down nearly 1.5% overall during the same 10-week period.

The school board also celebrated the district Students of the Month for February 2024. The students are RaeLynne Gayler (Central Cove Preschool), Dylan Gardner (Ashley Elementary), Thaxton Slaugh (Davis Elementary), Millie Wilkinson (Discovery Elementary), Marisela Rivera (Eagle View Elementary), Case Carson (Lapoint Elementary), Aimzley Slaugh (Maeser Elementary), Matthew Olsen (Naples Elementary), Madison Jolley (Uintah Middle School), Clark Dillman (Vernal Middle School); Emma Aycock (Uintah High School), and Jadelin Foster (Ashley Valley Education Center/Uintah Online).

Congratulations to all these outstanding students and to everyone who supports them!

UHS Sterling Scholar Night
Uintah High School will celebrate its 2023-2024 Sterling Scholars on Monday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. in the Vernal Middle School Auditorium. This year’s Sterling Scholars are Emma Aycock (Family and Consumer Sciences); Rylee Crane (Science); Bowden Gardner (Mathematics); Hadlie Horrocks (Agricultural Science); Annabelle Johnson (Instrumental Music); Emberly Kinsey (Visual Arts); Jacob Knox (Business and Marketing); Kate Larson (World Languages); Cole Manwaring (Social Sciences); Lewis Pettit (General Scholarship); and Kaylee Russell (Dance). The Northeast Region Sterling Scholar Competition is set for March 12.

No School Feb. 16 & Feb. 19
As a reminder, there is no school for USD students on Friday, Feb. 16. It is a parent-teacher conference trade day for school staff. Also, there is no school on Monday, Feb.19, in observance of Presidents' Day. All district buildings including the district office will be closed for the holiday. They will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

VEX Robotics Competition at UHS
Uintah High School is hosting the Eastern Utah VEX Robotics Competition in the school Commons on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Utes have five teams registered for the competition. Fourteen teams from other schools in Utah and Wyoming will also be competing. The community is invited to come watch the competition. UHS engineering and robotics teacher Joseph Woodard said the best time for spectators to see the robots in action is from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free.

Special Business Meeting
The school board will hold a special business meeting on Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. at the district office in Naples. During the meeting, the board will review proposed capital projects for the upcoming fiscal year and determine which projects should receive preliminary approval. UHS Jazz Dinner Fundraiser
Tickets are on sale now for the 7th Annual Uintah High Jazz Dinner, which is set for Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. The dinner is a fundraiser for Uintah High’s Band program. It will be held at the Vernal Elks Lodge, 35 N. 300 West, this year. Visit uintahband.ludus.com for tickets.

Tickets on Sale for Something Rotten
Tickets are available now for Uintah High Theatre’s production of Something Rotten! Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare. The musical will run March 1-2; March 4-5; and March 7-9. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. For tickets, visit uintah.ludus.com.

Celebrations
Congratulations to the Uintah High Family, Career, Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter on their success at Region! Eight UHS FCCLA members attended the Region 3 Conference at Lone Peak High School. Seven of them displayed their talents in various STAR Events. "All but one are newcomers to FCCLA this year and had little to no prior experience in sewing or other FCCLA activities before this school year," chapter advisor Heather Moulton said.

Madilynn Barnes earned a gold ribbon in Fashion Design and Elly Young earned a gold ribbon in Repurpose and Redesign. Silver ribbons were awarded to Aisling Neale in Fashion Construction; Adaline Pettit in Fashion Construction; Addilyn Foley in Teach or Train; and Emma Aycock in Nutrition and Wellness. Lamona Blackhorse earned a bronze ribbon in Fashion Construction.

FCCLA is a student organization that promotes leadership skills, networking, and showcasing talents in various categories related to family and consumer sciences. All seven UHS students who competed at Region have qualified for the State FCCLA Conference, which will be held March 26-27.

Congratulations as well to the Uintah High Boys Swim Team! They won the Region 8 championship in Heber City last Friday. The girls team finished 6th in Region. Uintah High’s Wyatt Kiever, Cullen Thomas, Jaten Barraclough and Jagger Morton won the 200 Medley Relay, breaking their own school record in the process. Morton also won the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke, both in school record times. This season he has set four individual school records in addition to setting the school record with his 200 Medley Relay teammates. Barraclough won the region title in the 100 Butterfly. Barraclough, Morton, Kiever and Paul Buschkowsky also won the 400 Freestyle Relay. The 4A State Swim Meet is Feb. 16-17 at BYU.

Finally, the Uintah High Boys Wrestling Team won their Divisional meet last weekend by nearly 200 points. Eight Utes earned individual titles in their respective classifications: Ethan Sharp, Rykan Hacking, Michael Alexander, Jaxon McCurdy, Brody Rhoades, Mason Holt, Christian Hartle, and Caden Young. Uintah will look to earn its fourth consecutive state title next week at the 4A Boys State Wrestling Tournament, which is set for Feb. 16-17 at the UCCU Center in Orem.

The Uintah High Girls Team placed 2nd at their Divisional, which was held at Ridgeline High School. Sadie Rhoades, Chanley Green, JennaCee Harrison and Sydnie Dick each earned individual titles in their respective classifications. The Utes will seek a second consecutive state title next week at the 4A Girls State Wrestling Tournament, which is set for Feb. 14-15 at the UCCU Center in Orem.

Weekend Events
The UHS Girls Basketball Team and UHS Boys Basketball Team are on the road at Payson High School tonight.
