The Uintah School Board will hold a special business meeting this Thursday, June 25, at noon in the boardroom at the Uintah School District Office, 826 S. 1500 East, Naples.

The meeting has been called following the cancellation of a previously planned judgment levy process. Board President Dave Chivers directed district administration to withdraw the intent to hold a Truth in Taxation hearing for a proposed judgment levy — a decision that requires the district to schedule a special board meeting before the end of the month to formally set the local tax rate.

Why the Judgment Levy Hearing is Canceled

District administration, after consulting with board members individually on Monday, determined that unanticipated one-time revenue growth made it unnecessary to pursue a judgment levy.

Shortly before the regularly scheduled board meeting on June 17, the district learned it will receive additional funds because of unexpected growth in the tax base. After analyzing the full picture, the district determined that it will receive a combined $1,273,190 in unanticipated one-time revenue for the upcoming fiscal year.

Before the new revenue was identified, the board had planned to consider the passage of a judgment levy to address a revenue shortfall caused by an $838,181 refund it had to pay to Mid-America Pipeline Co. The refund was ordered after Mid-America Pipeline Co. successfully appealed the Utah State Tax Commission's assessments of its properties in Uintah County from 2018 to 2025.

With the unanticipated revenue, the district can now cover the refund entirely. The board will have flexibility to use the remaining $435,009 in unanticipated revenue to strengthen the district's long-term financial position.

On Monday, the district notified the Utah State Tax Commission and the Uintah County Clerk/Auditor's Office that it is withdrawing the proposed judgment levy and canceling the Truth in Taxation hearing that had been scheduled for Aug. 5.

About the Special Business Meeting

The June 25 special meeting agenda is expected to include three action items related to setting the local tax rate and adopting next year's budget. The meeting is expected to be brief because the FY2027 budget has been discussed in detail during a public hearing on June 3 and the board's work session and business meeting on June 17.

The district will stream the meeting on Zoom. Those attending via Zoom may provide comments on the agenda items, and instructions are available on the district’s website. The agenda for the meeting will be posted on the district's public meeting portal at least 24 hours in advance, as required by law, and will include the Zoom meeting link and passcode.

The district is unable to provide technical support for Zoom, and technical issues that arise during the meeting may not be fixable in real time. To ensure comments are received, members of the public are encouraged to attend the meeting in person.
