Celebrations

At the end of the 2024-2025 school year, USD third graders exceeded the state average for Reading on Grade Level! The state average is 48.7%. The district average is 51.1%

Over the past three years, third grade reading scores in the district have increased by 13.1 percentage points, according to data from the Utah State Board of Education.

"While many factors may have contributed to this growth, three stand out: the intentional implementation of evidence-based programs such as CKLA and UFLI, consistent monitoring and support from administrators to ensure program fidelity, and teachers’ effective analysis of student reading data to guide instruction," USD Elementary Curriculum Director Jayme Leyba said.

In alignment with Utah State Board of Education (USBE) Board Rule R277-406, Reading on Grade Level (ROGL) is achieved when a third-grade student demonstrates proficiency in reading through meeting specific criteria. ROGL is defined as a student scoring above benchmark on the end-of-year reading assessment and obtaining a composite score of 405 or higher on the end-of-year Acadience Reading assessment.

"The research is clear," USD Superintendent Dr. Rick Woodford said. "Students who read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are much more likely to graduate from high school and enjoy life-long economic, health, and social benefits. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students. Let’s keep the momentum going for 2026."

Need another reason to celebrate? The Davis Dragons have got one!

They held a special assembly this week with representatives from i-Ready, an online program that helps teachers assess and personalize learning for students in reading and math.

During the assembly, the Dragons learned that they are the only school in Utah to earn i-Ready Super Stretch School status in mathematics, and one of 84 schools in the nation to accomplish this achievement. The award is based on i-Ready Diagnostic data from the 2024-2025 school year, which showed that 57% of Davis students achieved their Stretch Growth Goals.

Super Stretch Schools are schools with 200 or more students that had 55 percent or more of students meet Stretch Growth goals. Stretch Growth marks the amount of growth a student should target to enter the path to attaining grade-level proficiency. It puts students who placed below grade level on their first diagnostic on a path to proficiency, and it helps students who placed on or above grade level maintain advanced proficiency levels.

During the 2022-2023 school year, 37% of Davis Dragons achieved their Stretch Growth goals. The following school year, that mark bumped up to 39%. Davis Principal Cris Labrum attributed last year’s 18 percentage point increase to hard work by teachers, staff, instructional coaches, students, parents and guardians.

ā€œOur team at Davis is committed to helping students learn the math and reading skills they need to be successful in school and in life,ā€ Labrum said.

ā€œWe’re not content with 57 percent,ā€ she said. ā€œThis school year’s goal is to have 65% of our students or more achieve their Stretch Growth goals. I’m confident we can do it because Davis Dragons are the best!ā€

Finally, congratulations to Jayden Murray on his first Major League strikeout in Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees! Murray – pitching for the Houston Astros after being called up from the Sugar Land Space Cowboys – struck out the Yankees’ Jose Caballero with a four-seam fastball clocked at 96 mph.

A member of the Uintah High Class of 2015, Murray faced four batters in 1 1/3 innings of work in his Major League debut, going three up, three down in the ninth.
