This is the image for the news article titled Weekly District Update - Sept. 30, 2022It’s been a busy week around the district!

On Wednesday, Uintah Schools Superintendent Dr. Rick Woodford and members of the district leadership team met with Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum, Vernal Police Chief Dylan Rooks, and Naples Police Chief Nathan Simper to discuss steps that can be taken to improve the safety of students and staff. The date for the meeting was set in early September.

As a result of the meeting, local law enforcement will conduct on-site safety/security assessments for each of the district’s campuses and provide the superintendent with recommendations for improvements in facilities and procedures. Once the district has the assessments, the superintendent and district leadership will explore ways to implement the recommendations.

Those in the meeting, including district Business Administrator Jason Johnson and Student Services Director Dean Wilson, also agreed to identify areas where additional training for district employees and emergency responders is needed. When that's done, the district and law enforcement will schedule the appropriate training to improve the effectiveness of emergency response to incidents at our schools.

Uintah School District looks forward to continuing its long-standing partnership with the law enforcement agencies in our area as part of our shared commitment to keeping students and staff safe.

Gov. Spencer Cox Visits UHS
On Thursday, Gov. Spencer Cox visited Uintah High School. The governor spoke to three separate gatherings of students about the importance of being active in their community and supporting each other. He also answered students' questions on a number of topics. You can read more about the governor’s visit HERE and see photos HERE.

Bike Utah at UMS
Instructors from Bike Utah spent the week working with students in Christine Whetton’s P.E. classes at Uintah Middle School. Bike Utah brought bikes and helmets for everyone. They taught students safety rules, basic bike care, and other skills. On Thursday, the classes went on a neighborhood ride to practice everything they had learned during the week. Photos of Bike Utah’s visit to UMS can be found HERE.

Friday Bus Schedules
Changes were made this week to Friday schedules for buses serving Davis Elementary, Eagle View Elementary, Vernal Middle School and Uintah High School. These should be the final changes to Friday bus schedules, unless the need arises to set up additional stops.

To check your student's bus pick-up and/or drop-off time, please click HERE.

Friday schedules for secondary buses show pickup and drop off times. Elementary school pick up times are the same on Friday as they are the rest of the week. Times posted may vary based on the number of riders. Please have students arrive at their stop 5 minutes ahead of the posted time to ensure they don't miss the bus.

Recycling Program Suspended
Due to staffing issues and low student enrollment, the district has suspended its recycling program until further notice. The district is collecting all recycling trailers for storage. Please do not dump recyclables at Building B behind Uintah Middle School.

Celebrations
Congratulations to Uintah High junior Angelina Nading! Her design is one of 20 semifinalists for Utah's new state flag from thousands of submissions. Last year Angelina attended Local Government Day at the state capitol as a member of Vernal Youth City Council. As part of the visit, students participated in a flag design session. One of the facilitators spotted Angelina's design and singled it out as one to watch.

The royal blue of the Angelina's design represents tradition, power and justice. The beehive references the state slogan and signals industry, community and cooperation. The perfect circle of stars symbolizes unity, with eight stars representing Utah’s Tribal Nations.

Utahns can submit their feedback about the 20 flag designs through the More Than a Flag website until Oct. 5.

Congratulations to Davis Elementary students Max Hansen, Payslee Bethers and Betsy Goodrich. They were each spotlighted last week by their school for acts of kindness toward fellow students. Max paid for a classmate’s lunch after the classmate’s own lunch was ruined, Payslee helped a friend put her shoe back on after she fell at recess, and Betsy helped a student who she recognized was struggling with math. Great job by these Davis Dragons!

Congratulations to Uintah High freshman Eastyn Ewell! He finished region play this week as the top individual golfer in Region 7. Eastyn has qualified to play in the 5A State Tournament, which is scheduled for Oct. 10-11 at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele.

Congrats as well to Uintah High teacher Curt Hoffart! He has been selected for the Utah State Board of Education Teacher Spotlight for Health and Physical Education for the month of October. He will be featured in the October Health and PE newsletter and on the SHAPE Utah social media pages. Outstanding work!
