The last day of school for the Uintah School District is Friday, May 27. School that day will be held in-person for all students, except those who attend half-day kindergarten on the east side of the district. The school day will follow the district’s
Minimum Day Schedule.
The district is required by state law to hold classes on the final day of the school year. Holding the last day of school in-person is necessary because some students won’t have access to their Chromebooks at home to complete work online.
Buses will run on their normal Monday-Thursday pickup schedule on May 27 and the school day will begin at the Monday-Thursday start time. Drop-off times will coincide with Minimum Day release times listed above. School meals will also be provided on May 27.
New School Board Member
On Thursday night, the Uintah School Board appointed Denise Maynard to fill the vacancy in District #2. The unanimous vote came during a special business meeting held at the Uintah School District Office in Naples.
Maynard is a 1993 graduate of Uintah High School. She and her husband, Jason, have three children. Two have graduated from Uintah High and attended college at Southern Utah University. The couple’s youngest child is a sophomore at Uintah High.
Following the board vote Thursday night, 8th District Court Judge Clark McClellan administered the oath of office, swearing Maynard in as the representative for District #2. Maynard’s appointment ends Dec. 31. She will need to be elected by District #2 voters in November to remain on the board.
The vacancy on the school board in District #2 was created earlier this year when the Uintah County Commission realigned district boundaries, as required by law. With the realignment, board President Dave Chivers now represents District #1 and board member Harlan “Scoot” Wilkins serves as an at-large member until his term expires on Dec. 31.

March 9 School Board Meeting
The Uintah School Board will hold a regularly scheduled work session and business meeting on Wednesday, March 9, at Eagle View Elementary School. The board will also hold its semi-annual Impact Aid meeting that day. The work session will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Impact Aid meeting at 5:30 p.m. and the business meeting at 7 p.m.

Mamma Mia Opens Tonight!
Tonight is Opening Night for Uintah High Theatre’s production of Mamma Mia in the UHS auditorium! The smash hit musical is based on the songs of ABBA and the costumes, set design and lighting match the music perfectly. Additional performances are set for March 5, March 7-8, March 10-12. Maeser Cubs “Dodge Drugs”
This morning, Maeser Elementary wrapped up its celebration of Red Ribbon Week with a Dodge Drugs event. The school's student council organized dodgeball games between the 4th and 5th grade classes and local law enforcement officers. Students from the younger grades got to watch the action from the stage in the school gym. The school mascot, Karl the Cub, was also on hand to cheer on his classmates.
Officers from the Vernal Police Department, Uintah County Sheriff's Office, Naples Police Department and Adult Probation & Parole participated in the event. Lapoint Students Earn “Wolf Tags”
Faculty and staff at Lapoint Elementary have been on the lookout this year for students who are examples to their peers and are following the school's five rules: Nice Words, Calm Body, Follow Directions, Nice Hands, and Finish Work. Students who meet these criteria earn a “Wolf Tag.”
At the end of the week, students who have earned a Wolf Tag get a color-changing Lapoint Elementary Wolf Pack pencil. They are also entered into a drawing to win various prizes and treats. "It has been amazing to see students work so hard and wonderful for our faculty and staff to celebrate our incredible students," Principal Don Heath said.
Celebrations
The final three Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year honorees have been named. The Teacher of the Year honorees are Cindy Prather (Davis Elementary), Mindy Bird (Lapoint Elementary), Chris Whetton (Uintah Middle School). The Classified Employee of the Year honorees Mileidy Velasquez (Davis Elementary), Suzie Huber (Lapoint Elementary), Ruby Jewkes (Uintah Middle School)
In last week’s update we recognized the honorees from the district’s other campuses. Each school’s Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year will be considered for district Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year, which will be announced in April.
The Uintah Transportation Department’s blood drive on Feb. 23 was a big success, according to the American Red Cross. There were 41 donors, including six first-time donors, who donated a total of 43 pints of blood. That’s enough to save 129 lives, the Red Cross said. Great work!
Uintah High’s DECA Club dominated at the recent state competition, taking first place in four of the six chapter projects. Seventeen students qualified for nationals and the chapter placed second in the Chapter of the Year standings. The following students earned top 10% test scores in the state: Justin Schmidt (Business Administration), Kenadee Allred (Business Management and Administration), Bryson Allen (Marketing Cluster), and Ellie Hartman (Entrepreneurship).
Ellie Hartman also placed first in the Entrepreneurship Individual Series role play. In the project category Kenadee Allred, Nate Larsen, and Masen Briggs (Project Management Business Solutions); Sydney Migliori and Ellie Hartman (Project Management Career Development); Bryson Allen, Ashlyn Coxsen, and Ryan Mansfield (Project Management Community Giving); Paige Wardle (Buying and Researching Operations Research Project); and Kelsey Alexander, Gabe Elison and Marcy Reynolds (Sales Project) placed first. Reagan Smith and Justin Schmidt finished the Start-Up Business Plan competition in second place, earning a $500 scholarship. Congratulations to the DECA Club on their success!
Uintah High School held its Winter Sports Awards Night on Thursday. In addition to team awards, three student-athletes were honored for earning Academic-All State awards: Addie Anderson (girls wrestling), Carson Coltharp (boys basketball), and Dustin Rhoades (boys wrestling). Coltharp and Rhoades also earned Academic All-State awards in the fall for football. With over 85,000 students participating in high school activities in Utah, this award is the most prestigious honor the Utah High School Activities Association presents to senior students. Congratulations to these outstanding student-athletes!
The high school also presented Gregg Stensgard with the Distinguished Contributor Award during Thursday night’s awards ceremony. During his 25 years as head coach of Uintah High Wrestling his teams won two state titles, were runners-up eight times, finished in the top three at state 24 times, and eight of his wrestlers went on to earn college All-American honors. Stensgard has coached multiple sports besides wrestling, hosts a radio show on X94 to highlight Uintah High’s amazing kids, organizes the always-entertaining Mr. and Miss Uintah competition, and is the coach for the high school’s championship Powerlifting Team.
