This is the image for the news article titled UHS junior is semifinalist in flag redesignCongratulations to junior Angelina Nading! Her design is one of 20 semifinalists for Utah's new state flag from thousands of submissions.

Last year Angelina attended Local Government Day at the state capitol as a member of Vernal Youth City Council. As part of the visit, students participated in a flag design session. One of the facilitators spotted Angelina's design and singled it out as one to watch.

The royal blue of the Angelina's design represents tradition, power and justice. The beehive references the state slogan and signals industry, community and cooperation. The perfect circle of stars symbolizes unity, with eight stars representing Utah’s Tribal Nations.

Utahns can submit their feedback about the 20 flag designs through the More Than a Flag website until Oct. 5. The Utah State Flag Task Force also plans to reach out to state and tribal leaders for their feedback.

After Oct. 5, the design review committee will narrow the field again to four to six finalists. The Utah State Flag Task Force, led by Gov. Spencer Cox and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, will then pick final designs to present to the Legislature for a final vote.

State leaders have decided that Utah's flag needs an update because it doesn't represent the state as much as it did almost 120 years ago. Since 1903, Utah has flown its state seal on its flag. The design received a touch-up in 1911 and has largely has remained unchanged for over a century. The state began the redesign process last year.

If a new design is approved, the current state flag won’t be retired. It will become the official flag of the governor’s office.
