Malouf graduated from Uintah High in 1998. He and his wife Kacie co-founded Malouf, a bedding and home furnishings provider, in 2003. Today, they lead a team of more than 850 employees at the company’s headquarters in Logan.

Each year UHS’s Distinguished Alumni Committee meets to go over the nominations submitted for the award.

“We choose the award recipient based on many factors, including success in their given field, their contributions to the community, and their ability to connect with, motivate and serve as a positive role model for UHS students,” Uintah High Vice Principal Scott Mansfield said.

“Sam clearly met all the criteria,” Mansfield said. “His emphasis on teamwork, self-reliance, commitment, finding something you’re passionate about, and giving back are important messages for our students.”

Traditionally, the winner of the Distinguished Alumni Award speaks to students during an assembly. Due to COVID precautions, Malouf recorded a video message instead.

“There is long-term, lifetime value in learning to work with other people,” he said. “As good as you are, you won’t go very far and your total potential, your capacity is limited if you can’t get along with others.

“That’s one big (piece of) advice I would have for high schoolers,” Malouf added. “Learn to be positive and to assume positive intent in other people and to work together. There’s a lot more power and potential in people as a group.”

In 2019, Malouf was ranked No. 2 on the national Comparably Best CEOs Top Rated by Employees list for Small and Mid-Size Companies. He was also featured in the article “20 Companies Where Employees Are the Happiest” by Glassdoor and Malouf was named one of the Best Workplaces of 2019 and 2018 by Inc. Magazine.

In 2017, Malouf received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the distribution and manufacturing category in the Utah region. The Maloufs also have been widely recognized for their charitable efforts with organizations like Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse, Internet Crimes Against Children’s Task Force, and the National Children’s Alliance.

Sam and Kacie head the Malouf Foundation, whose flagship cause is to confront child sexual exploitation, specifically sex trafficking and online abuse. The foundation recently hosted the inaugural Human Trafficking Policy and Education Summit at the Malouf headquarters in Logan, where business, congressional, and community leaders came together to listen to the experiences of trafficking survivors.

The Maloufs are the parents of five children and live in the Cache Valley.
