Two weeks without a Weekly District Update means we’re going to back in time a little bit.
The Uintah School Board met on April 5 at Vernal Middle School for its regularly scheduled work session and business meeting. Video of both meetings can be found on the district’s YouTube channel at

During its business meeting, the board celebrated the district’s students of the month for April. The students are Hudson White (Central Cove Preschool); Jesse Matheny (Ashley Elementary School); Oscar Francisco (Davis Elementary School); Kaydon Janes (Discovery Elementary School); Amber Betts (Eagle View Elementary School); Lydia McKee (Lapoint Elementary School); Madie Jensen (Maeser Elementary School); Steven Hennessy (Naples Elementary School); Aubrey Mansfield (Uintah Middle School); Megan Glazier (Vernal Middle School); RJ McCarrel (Uintah High School); Cambree Bowden (Ashley Valley Education Center/Uintah Online). Congratulations to these students and to everyone who supports them.
The board also celebrated the Uintah High boys and girls wrestling teams on their recent 5A state championships; Coach Patrick Sharp for being named 5A Girls Wrestling Coach of the Year; the FBLA students who qualified for Nationals; the DECA students who qualified for the International Career Development Conference; the FFA students who earned their state FFA degree; Uintah FFA advisor David Wilson for receiving the Utah FFA Distinguished Service Award; Uintah FFA President Aysia Massey for being elected Utah FFA State Reporter; and the Sterling Scholars who won or placed at the Northeast Region competition. All these individuals have been recognized by name in past Weekly District Updates. Congratulations to them and to everyone who helps them pursue their passions.
UHS Choirs Compete at Region
Three of Uintah High’s advanced choirs performed at the Region Large Group Choir Festival on Tuesday. To qualify for state, a choir must receive a superior rating (I) from each of the three judges. The Uintah Men’s Choir, Virsonum, received ratings of II+, II+ and II. The Uintah Women’s Choir, Luminosa, received ratings of I, I- and II+. The Uintah Mixed Choir, Polyphony, received ratings of I-, I- and I-. “Unfortunately, the choirs didn’t qualify for the state festival this year, but all performed incredibly well and have shown immense growth this year,” choir director Aaron Merryweather said.
Middle School & High School Art Show
The Middle and High School Art Show is going on this month at the Uintah County Heritage Museum in Vernal. Admission is free. The museum, located at 155 E. Main Street, is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Transition Fair
The district will hold its annual Transition Fair at Uintah High School in the auditorium on Wednesday, April 26, at 5:30 p.m. This event is for parents of students ages 3 through 22 who have a 504 plan or an IEP. It will provide information about school and community resources that are available for students and families. For additional information, call 435-781-3110, ext. 2639.
Elementary Concert & Art Show
The Maeser and Discovery Elementary Choirs will perform a free concert on May 2 at Discovery Elementary. The concert starts at 7 p.m., but guests are invited to come as early as 6:30 p.m. to enjoy artwork by Discovery Elementary students.
Gilligan’s Island Tickets on Sale
Uintah High Theatre’s production of Gilligan’s Island the Musical runs May 2-5 in the high school’s Little Theatre. All shows start at 7 p.m. Seating is limited due to the size of the venue. Tickets can be purchased at

Celebrations
Uintah High Math Club members Adaline Pettit, David Semadeni and Normand Thompson won the Junior Group at the Snow College Math Competition on April 4.
In the Senior Group competition, Uintah High’s Liana Cruz, Joshua Ek, Joseph Hardin, Nataly Franco, Christiana Pena, Lewis Pettit, Briel Pettit, Tommy Cruz, and Adam Semadeni placed 2nd overall.
Lewis Pettit placed 3rd in the Individual Senior competition, earning a full-tuition scholarship to Snow College. Adam Semadeni placed 6th in the Individual Senior competition.
David Semadeni place 2nd and Adeline Pettit placed 6th in the Individual Junior competition. UHS also placed 1st in the T-shirt Design Contest with a design created by Math Club President Adam Semadeni.
On April 6, Superintendent Rick Woodford announced that Uintah High teacher Kami Elison and Transportation Department mechanic Erik Middleton had been chosen as the district’s Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year, respectively.
"Kami and Erik personify our district's mission and vision," the superintendent said. "They are exemplars of the many outstanding employees across our district who are committed to inspiring our students to reach their full individual potential."
Elison has worked for the district for 6 years. She teaches business classes at UHS, where she serves as the CTE department head, the advisor for the Student Broadcasting program and the DECA club, and coaches girls basketball.
Middleton has worked for the district for 12 years. He primarily maintains a fleet of 120 district vehicles known as the “white fleet,” but also works on buses. He has been integral in developing new processes for pre-trip and post-trip inspections and served on committees related to the district's purchase of electric school buses.
Elison and Middleton will be celebrated during the school board’s May business meeting. Elison is the district’s candidate for Utah Teacher of the Year.
Upcoming Events
The Uintah High Boys Tennis Team will celebrate its 11 seniors at 3 p.m. today before taking on the Cottonwood Colts in region play at the UHS Tennis Courts. Matches are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
Good luck to the Uintah High Track & Field Team in today’s Eastern Utah Championships at Carbon High School. Good luck as well to the UHS Boys Soccer Team and the UHS Softball Team today. Both teams are at Stansbury High for region games.
Junior Prom is tomorrow night. Promenade is at 5:30 p.m. in the Main Gym. Admission is free and it's open to the public. Prom is from 8-10 p.m. Tickets are required and must be purchased from the UHS Finance Office in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
Last but not least, good luck to the members of Uintah High’s DECA club who are in Florida, where they’ll compete at the International Career Development Conference starting on Sunday.
