Uintah Schools Superintendent Dr. Rick Woodford announced today that Dr. Mistalyn Leis has been appointed interim director of human resources for Uintah School District.
The appointment comes after current HR director Rick Johnson informed the superintendent that he has accepted a new position outside the district. Johnson is leaving the district on Feb. 28 after serving as an administrator for more than a decade.
"Rick has been an outstanding HR director and a pleasure to work with over the years," Woodford said. "We will miss his leadership and wish him the best with his new opportunity."
Leis is in her 22nd year with Uintah School District. She has worked as a school counselor, program coordinator, assistant principal, and is currently in her 8th year as Vernal Middle School principal. Leis holds master’s degrees in school counseling and administration, and a doctorate in family psychology.
“Although a piece of my heart will always be with Vernal Middle School, I am excited to expand my capacity and work with all Uintah School District employees,” Leis said. “I strongly believe, ‘If the big people (employees) aren't OK, the little people (students) don't stand a chance.’ I look forward to this new opportunity. I'm humbled and honored to support our teachers and students as they work to reach their full individual potential!”
Superintendent Woodford cited Leis’ many years of administrative experience, outstanding organizational skills, and history of strong leadership as key factors in the decision to appoint her as interim HR director. He also complimented her willingness to have “crucial conversations” with her staff, members of the school community, and her peers.
“She’s not afraid to seek out solutions when challenges arise,” the superintendent said. “That’s a critical strength that will serve our district well as we work to hire and retain employees who provide positive and engaging learning environments for all our students.”
Leis will move from VMS to the district office on Feb. 22. The district will name an interim principal for the middle school prior to that date.
