Last week, the district published a request for proposals (RFP) seeking bids from construction management firms or general contractors to oversee the project.

"We're excited to move forward with this construction project," Uintah School Board President Dave Chivers said.

"I'm in agriculture, that's no big secret," Chivers added. "It's definitely time we do something for our kids who are interested in learning more about an industry that brings in lots of dollars for local families, for our area and our state."

In 2019, the most recent year for which data is available, total cash receipts for livestock and crops in Uintah County was $51.8 million, according to Utah Agricultural Statistics.

Construction of the new 6,000-square-foot Ag Sciences building is slated to begin in May. It will be built on district property directly east of Uintah High and north of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Seminary building. The new building will meet all ADA regulations and will include classroom and lab space, as well as a "flexible learning area" teachers and students can use for larger projects.

"This new building will provide better access for kids of all abilities," Chivers said. "The improved learning spaces will also make it easier for kids to have the hands-on experiences that can really bring classes like these to life."

Chivers noted that construction of a new UHS Ag Sciences building is "not something the school board just jumped in to." The project has been in the planning stages for the past few years, with funding for the building approved by the board in both the FY2020 and FY2021 budgets.

"As a board, we do our best to give kids opportunities to explore their interests and reach their full individual potential," Chivers said, "It's important for us to build up programs like our Ag program, which teaches kids skills that can help them make a living, support a family and contribute to our community."

The RFP deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. More information about the RFP can be found on the district's website at https://www.uintah.net/departments/business_department/current_bids.
