Uintah High School celebrated the graduation of more than 400 seniors Friday, May 28, at Coach Belcher Stadium.

The graduates entered the stadium to applause and cheers from hundreds of family members and friends. Principal Sharon Shipton opened the commencement program by asking all current and former military members and law enforcement officers in attendance to stand and be recognized for their service.

Following a performance of the National Anthem by senior Abigail Reynolds, Senior Class President John Brown encouraged his classmates to look to the future instead of clinging to memories of the past.

"Let us use our talents and our still ever-growing experiences and knowledge to conquer these next few years of life," Brown said. "Whether that's college, work, missions, I have nothing but faith that the Class of 2021 will leave a legacy that will be remembered for generations."

Senior Class Secretary Kyra Putnam spoke about the obstacles the senior class faced during their high school careers. As an example, she cited the challenges she faced in AP English, saying there were times when she felt like she didn't belong in the class. Ultimately, she realized her success would not be a reflection of her intelligence, but rather it was about her commitment to learning and doing the work to achieve her goal.

"Each and every one of us have had mountains to climb. We've had pits that sometimes we didn't think we'd get out of," Putnam said. "We have been faced with adversity and we've been hurt a time or two, but today we graduate. We made it!"

Putnam's speech was followed by a vocal performance of Welcome Home by Polyphony, Uintah High's advanced mixed choir.

Student Body President Marcus Bender spoke next, encouraging the graduating class to "make an even greater difference in this world."

"We can all push ourselves to not only make ourselves better, but to leave this great country and beautiful world in better shape than what we came into," Bender said.

Senior Mattison Bowen then sang "Vienna" by Billy Joel.

Seventeen seniors were recognized for earning a cumulative 4.0 GPA, receiving their diploma cases first. Those 17 seniors then read the names of their classmates as they received their diploma cases from Principal Shipton.

Commencement ended with the tradition of the graduates moving their tassels from right to left before throwing their caps skyward in celebration.
