The first week back after Spring Break was a busy one around the district.

On Tuesday, the district announced that Vernal Middle School teacher Kimberly Hawks had been selected as its Teacher of the Year and Uintah High School administrative assistant Jodi Ryan had been selected as its Classified Employee of the Year. Hawks and Ryan will be honored by the Uintah School Board at the board’s May meeting. To read more about these two stellar employees, CLICK HERE.

The Uintah School Board held its regularly scheduled work session and business meeting on Wednesday. During the business meeting, the board voted to complete the district’s purchase of the BHI building in Naples by April 30. The district office, transportation office, bus garage will relocate to the BHI building during the summer. The board will then determine what to do with the district’s surplus property.

The board also voted in its business meeting to adopt a schedule for the 2021-2022 academic year that will once again have students attending classes both in person and remotely each week. The board evaluated and discussed survey results, student performance data, and other relevant information before a motion was made to adopt the new schedule.

Under the schedule approved by the board, students enrolled in the district's "brick and mortar" schools next year will attend classes in person Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, most students will attend classes remotely. Those who need additional academic support will receive in-person instruction from their teachers on Fridays.

Specifics about the Friday plan for the 2021-2022 academic year will be developed by Superintendent Rick Woodford, district directors and coordinators, and other district stakeholders within the next 60 days, as required by the school board's vote.

The specifics of the plan will include, but are not limited to, Friday expectations and guidance for students, administrators, teachers, and staff; transportation for students attending in-person instruction on Fridays; and questions about meal service for all students on Fridays.

Once the Friday plan is developed, the board will review it during an open public meeting and decide whether to adopt, modify or reject it. Uintah Online will continue to be an option next year for students whose parents/guardians prefer online education over enrollment in a "brick and mortar" school.

As part of its business meeting, the board also celebrated the Uintah High boys wrestling team for winning the 2021 4A State Championship as well as the individual state champion wrestlers, Uintah High's Sterling Scholars, Uintah High DECA club members who won at state, and the district’s students of the month for April.

The students of the month for April are Karson Hamilton (Ashley Elementary); Chloe Martinez (Davis Elementary); Jeter King (Discovery Elementary); Alejandra Vivar Salguero (Eagle View Elementary); Carson Houston (Lapoint Elementary); Samuel Pierce (Maeser Elementary); Braxton Rasmussen (Naples Elementary); Jana Young (Uintah Middle School); Abbi Workman (Vernal Middle School); Kadence Gibson (Uintah High School); and Damon Curtis (AVEC/Uintah Online). Finally, the 30th Annual Mr. Uintah and 17th Annual Miss Uintah competitions were held Thursday night at Western Park. Twenty boys and nine girls competed. When the competition was over, Jayden Klein was named Mr. Uintah and Lexi Thacker was named Miss Uintah. Uintah High legend Curg Belcher, who started the Mr. Uintah Competition 30 years ago, was on hand to award the trophies. Congratulations to Jayden and Lexi, and to all the students who trained and competed!
