Uintah High School senior Eoin O'Hearn has earned a perfect score on the ACT.
O'Hearn, 17, took the standardized college admissions test in June, earning a score of 36. Only 0.195 percent of students who take the test earn a perfect score, according to the ACT website.
"I thought I was going to do pretty good," O'Hearn told the
Vernal Express. "I was extremely pleased when I saw the score and I felt confident after the test but I didn't think I would earn a perfect score.
"It was the greatest feeling I've had in my life," O'Hearn told the Express. "Later that night I shared the results with my parents and they couldn't stop saying how proud they were and even teared up."
O'Hearn, the son of Brian and Diane O'Hearn, of Vernal, has also qualified as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
More than 1.5 million juniors entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT last year. Semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest scoring entrants in each state.
To become a finalist, O'Hearn will submit a detailed application which describes his academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, and honors and awards.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from Finalists and announced beginning in the spring 2021.
