THE ARTS ELECTIVES

Art Foundations IA = A(1 Trimester)  An extension of the elementary art program with emphasis on understanding  the art process.   This is the recommended art class for all incoming art students.

Art Foundations IB   = A(1 Trimester) Prerequisite: Art Founds. A.  A continuation of the Art Found A course.

Art Foundations II =A( 1 Trimester) Prerequisite:  Art Foundations A.  This course is for the serious art student who wants to develop his/her artistic abilities.  Divergent thinking skills and self directed learning is a must.  Student will mat and display original works of art.

Crafts =A (1 Trimester) Prerequisite:  Art I

An introductory course designed to expose the student to the basic craft processes.   Costs range from $1:00 to $30.00 per project depending on what the student makes.  There will be at least six assigned projects that generally cost approximately  $25.00 for the trimester.  Students must have a working knowledge of the principles and elements of design.

Theater I  =A (1 Trimester)

This course is designed to build upon the Theater Class, which includes; Pantomime, Vocal performance, Solo acting, Improvisation, Duo acting, and Student directing.  We review basics and build upon that.  In this class, the student will be doing more acting and some directing so that they will be familiar with all aspects of drama.

Theater II =A (1 Trimester) Prerequisite: Theater I

This is a continuation of Theater, puts more emphasis on individual work.

 

8th Grade Band =A (3 Trimesters)

Prerequisite: 1-2 years band on the same instrument.

Purpose:  To play individual instruments at Jr. High Level according to state Music core requirements. 

To improve individual skills, ensemble skills, and to promote “school spirit”

9th Grade Band =A (3 Trimesters)

Prerequisite: 8th Grade Band.  Students must know all major scales, and have completed book 2 of a band method book.

Purpose: To play individual instruments at Jr. High Level according to state Music core requirements.

To improve individual skills, improve ensemble skills, to promote “school spirit”, and to learn to march with the Jr. High School Band. 

To join any band, you need to have approval and maintain an academic grade of “C” or better and a citizenship of “S” or better.

Mixed Chorus or Girls Chorus=A (1,2, or 3 Trimesters)

Diction           5.  Music Styles

Unison                                  

This course will have the students working on unison, two and three part harmony.  They will study music from different eras.

 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE ELECTIVE

 

Spanish I =L ( 2 Trimesters)

This is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture.  The emphasis is on basic speaking patterns and vocabulary.  This course demands considerable memorization along with oral and written practice.  Students with language skills at or above grade level will find this course interesting and challenging.  Students who find English difficult may want to wait to start a foreign language.

MISCELLANEOUS  ELECTIVES

 

Folklore =E (1 Trimester) 8th & 9th

A look at our culture and traditions through  story telling .  Folklore covers a wide range of  topics from world folk tales, holiday traditions , and urban legends to games that children play and the supernatural.

 

Peer Tutor  =E (1 Trimester)  9th Teachers signature required.

The student  helps instruct students with disabilities in the class room and community.  Must be responsible with good attendance.

 

Student Aide =E (1 Trimester) 9th Teacher signature required. 

Students must desire to assist in administrative office areas, or assist teacher during their preparation periods. 

 

Student Council  =E (1st Trimester) 8th & 9th

Forty five students are selected by election and/or application.  Class time is spent organizing, publicizing and carrying out student body activities such as dances, assemblies and contests.  Students are also introduced to a leadership curriculum.  Application only.

 

Yearbook  =E (1 Trimester)  8th & 9th Teachers permission only. 

Students fill out an application and will be approved by the teacher.  This class is during the fall or winter trimester.  Using the desk top publishing program, students will design, take pictures for, and produce the school yearbook. 

No Credit Electives

 

LDS Seminary  = 0 (2 Trimesters) 9th  No Credits

LDS Seminary A section is the study of the first half of the Old Testament B section is the study of the second half of the Old Testament.

Christian Seminary  =0 ( 2 Trimesters) 9th No Credits

You will look at the uniqueness and authority of the Bible.  In the 2nd half,

a study of the Old Testament.

 

VOCATIONAL - REQUIRED/ELECTIVES

 

Career Exploration  =V  (1 Trimester) 9th

This course is designed to help the students make future career choices.  Students take a look at their own skills, interest, abilities, and personalities and match them to a possible career.  Many different surveys are completed to assess the individual students needs and wants as well the Utah Careers Choices computer program.  Students go through decision making processes, future planning and goal setting, leading to sitting their own Student  Education Occupation Plan (SEOP).  Job seeking skills are also taught.

 

Dyn. of Clothing  = V ( 1 Trimester) 8th & 9t

An instructional course that prepares individuals with skills and techniques for clothing construction.  Through various projects students will gain skills, confidence, enthusiasm and desire to sew for oneself and family or friends.  This course includes 4-5 quick success projects that include but not limited to fashion, fabric selection, construction, maintenance and the effects of consumer choices.

Clothing 2 =V  (1 Trimester) 9th Prerequisite: Dyn. of Clothing

An instructional course that prepares individuals with more advanced skills and techniques and learn to recycle old clothing.

 

Foods and Fitness =V (1 Trimester) 8th & 9th

Prepares individuals to understand the principles of nutrition and to apply the principles to the basic skills involved in the study of food preparation.  Food preparation units are taught for each section of the basic food pyramid; dairy, protein, fruits, vegetables and grains.

 

Food for Life = V (1 Trimester) 9th Prerequisite: Foods and Fitness.

Students will study the principles of meal preparation and the application of these principles to the food pyramid.  Table setting, breakfasts, lunches, dinners will be studied through demonstrations and lab experiences

 

Marketing Intro. =V ( 1 Trimester) 9th

This introductory course will teach concepts of entry-level marketing.    The following skill standards will prepare a student in marketing.

Orienting students to Marketing Ed. /DECA. Students taking Marketing classes will have the opportunity to participate in the DECA organization.

 

Manufacturing Tech. (Woods) =V (1 Trimester) 8th & 9th

Gives students a basic understanding of materials and processes used in the wood working industry and also gives the student a knowledge of tools and machines used and their safety.

 

Teen Living =V (1 Trimester) 8th & 9th

This course prepares teens for personal, family, and social challenges by implementing positive coping mechanisms and promoting understanding of one’s self.  The course addresses issues which impact teenagers, including:  1) self concept, 2) family and peer relationships, 3) substance abuse, 4) personal loss through death, divorce, etc,. 5) dating and teenage pregnancy, and child abuse.  Emphasis is placed on personal responsibility, critical

Computer in Business =V (1 Tri.) 9th  Prereq:  Keyboard Applications.

This course will introduce students to business systems and experience how computers are used as tools in business.  The business information processing cycle, management principles, ethics, economics, finance, marketing, and communications will be presented.  Exposure to business software applications will be an integral part of this class, including Internet browsers, search engines, e-mail, word processing,  presentations, spreadsheet, and database software programs.

 

Foundations of Technology I =V  (1 Trimester) 8th &  9th  F.O.T. is  intended for students who are interested in solving problems through creative, hands-on activities that are related to structural, mechanical, electronic, communication and fluid technologies. Students will explore technology and how it impacts life as well as learn and follow the design/problem solving process. The lab experiences require that students read for information and direction, actively do what they read about, and then document what they read and did in design portfolios. This is a lab class and requires a $5 lab fee and is available for mature 8th and 9th grade students.

 

Foundations of Technology II =V  (1 Trimester) 9th is a Prerequisite for students

who have successfully completed the Foundations of Technology class. Students will continue to practice problem solving and design skills through individual projects that are related to structural, mechanical, electronic, communication and fluid technologies. The activities are centered on the safe and efficient use of resources, tools and technical concepts. This is a project lab class designed to nurture critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students should be self-directed learners and capable of working independently. It requires a $5 lab fee and completed projects can be purchased for the cost of the materials used.

 

Intro. to Communications Technology =V  (1 Trimester) 8th & 9th

is a class intended for students who have an interest in the technologies related to communication such as graphic design, silkscreen, web page design, video production, multimedia presentations, and digital photography. Students will create, store, manipulate, record, and transmit information through four major areas:

·drafting and design          ·electronic communications

·audio/visual/multi-media comm. ·graphic communications

Students will explore the impacts of communication technology on our society and explore related careers. This is a lab class and requires a $5 lab fee and is available for 8th grade and 9th grade students who are self-directed learners and capable of working independently. Completed communication projects can be purchased for the cost of the materials used

Keyboard Applications = V(1 Tri.) 8th & 9th Prerequisite: Keyboarding I

This course places emphasis on  increased speed and accuracy.  The formatting skills for preparing manuscripts, business letters, complex tables and business forms will be developed.

Word Processing I =V (1 Tri.) 9th Prerequisite: Keyboard  Applications.

In this introductory course, students learn basic word processing skills.  These invaluable skills include editing and proofreading documents, performing standard file management procedures, keyboarding, and creating applicable business documents to simulate a real-life job environment.
