The media that was used when this unit was taught, was the computers in the Naples Elementary computer lab.  The students had already learned basic keyboarding skills, mouse skills, and formatting in a Word document.

In addition to traditional classroom media (whiteboard, paper, and pencils,), the necessary media for this unit will include: computers, a laptop computer connected to a multimedia projector, and CD-ROMs.  All text for this project was created using Microsoft Office 2000 within the PowerPoint program.  This software is familiar to the students and it is easy to use and to understand.

The hardware and software requirements are:

1.  Compaq-Ipac computers complete with Windows 98, 63 MB of RAM, a 4.00 GB hard drive, and a 500 MHz Intel processor, or comparable.  Each student will have access to a computer for their individual use.

2.  Microsoft Power Point 2000 software will be used to create the presentations.

3.  Epson 510 Elite multimedia projector, or comparable.  It will be connected to a Dell CPt Latitude, or comparable laptop.

4.  Naples Elementary school has a server with a directory designated to saving students’ work.  Our lab is equipped with a program called GO BACK which erases the hard drive of the computers each day, so it is necessary for students to save to this directory.

5.  All completed published works will be stored in a folder in the network and then burned to a CD-ROM for student portfolios.

The graphics used in the practice story come from the Microsoft ClipArt Gallery.  The graphics for the self-directed story and the culmination activity come from the Microsoft ClipArt Gallery and the on-line Microsoft ClipArt Gallery.  After the students are comfortable inserting and manipulating the graphics from the ClipArt Gallery, they will be introduced to the on-line gallery, which is a more extensive gallery.  The on-line gallery will be introduced during the creation of the student-directed activity.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint Narrative software will be used when the students are recording their narration for their presentation.  The format of this software is easy for the students to understand and to use.

CD-ROMs will be used as presentation portfolios for the students.  The CDs will be burned with a CD burner that came with a desktop Dell computer.  Providing the students with a CD of their own presentations is an excellent way for the student to be able to share their work with family and friends.

The school laptop computer will be connected to the school’s Epson Multimedia Projector during the instruction of the unit.  Each step of the practice story will be shown with the projector before the students are allowed to practice the step.  Using the projector during instruction helps eliminate most of the confusion that students experience when learning new material.
