"The Chair of Victory" is reserved one day per week for the student who scores the highest on the last class exam. He/she is given grapes and juice and allowed to participate in class, do work for another class, listen to an i-Pod, or even sleep. Here are Latin 1 students who have sat in the chair this year.

Swat That Word

Games are frequently used for instructional purposes. Here, Tyler Cook and Brett Nielson are playing "Swat That Word." Latin vocabulary words are projected on the wall. Then, when the English translation is given, students try to be the first to hit the Latin word with flyswatters.

If you're tardy to Latin class, you do push-ups. Spencer Perry and Shea Shipton show off muscles that they've developed this year. MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO.

Overcoming Obstacles

UHS Latin students overcome many obstacles, internal and external, in the course of their success. Here, Courtney Evans sharpens a pencil in the classroom pencil sharpener that someone installed backwards on the wall.

About Our Teacher

Wes Baden

Wes Baden is a retired lawyer who asked himself the question, "What would excite me to get up and do every morning?," and realized that he wanted to teach high school Latin. He believes, with Captain Kangaroo, that the best teacher is an entertainer. Serious study of Latin vocabulary and grammar, plus Roman history and culture, is often combined with games and other forms of play in the classroom. Scoffers are challenged to beat UHS on the National Latin Exam.
