School Board Highlights

From the September 25, 2007 Uintah School District Board of Education Business meeting

 

 

RECOGNITIONS

 

Outstanding Employee at Vernal Middle School:  Tom Howells was recognized by Vice Principal Andy McKea for being chosen as the outstanding employee at Vernal Middle School.  She said, “I can’t even begin to tell you what a great employee he is.  He is a selfless employee and when something needs to be done he does it.  He is well deserving of this award.”

 

Outstanding Speech/Language Teacher:  Carmen Heath was recognized by Superintendent Nelson as an employee who is an excellent example of doing what is best for the students.  Carmen works in several schools with students to improve their speech and language difficulties.  She was awarded the “Puff Ball” Award and given a gift certificate.

 

REPORTS

 

AYP and U-PASS Reports:  Curriculum Director, Leonard Sullivan, reviewed the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and the Utah Performance Assessment System for Students (U-PASS) reports with Board members.

 

UBATC Underpass Report, Facilities Assessment Report, and Schematic Relating to UHS Parking Lot:  Rob Behunin and Paul Hacking discussed the underpass which will be built underneath 500 North to connect Uintah High School and the new Utah State University/UBATC campus which will ensure student safety.  Mike Manning, KMA Architects, displayed a schematic of a proposal to develop a parking area in front of the high school.  Si Hutt and Brian Gorum reported the recommendations from the Bond Review Committee.

 

School Progress & Goals Reports:  The principals from Ashley, Davis, Discovery, and Lapoint, reported to the Board of Education on the goals set by each building staff for the upcoming school year and what steps are being taken to meet those goals.

 

BUSINESS

 

Approval of Policy 002.0500 Administrative Regulations(Second Reading)  A motion was made by JoAnn Cowan to approve Policy 002.0500 on second reading with the following change to Section 3.0:  “These procedures will be submitted to the Board for review and approval.”  Perry Taylor seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.

 

Approval of Policy 002.0720 Public Appearances at Board Meetings(Second Reading)  A motion was made by Perry Taylor to approve Policy 002.0720 as presented on second reading.  Scott Ruppe seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.

 

Approval of Real Estate Purchase:  A motion was made by Scott Ruppe to approve the purchase of real estate property in the amount of $230,000.  Perry Taylor seconded the motion.  Those in favor:  Scott Ruppe, Perry Taylor, and JoAnn Cowan.  Those opposed:  Shane Frost and Dr. Rodney Anderson; motion carried.

 

Approval of Revisions to Extracurricular Salary Schedule:  A motion was made by Scott Ruppe to approve the revision to the Extra Curricular Salary Schedule to incorporate the $2,500 legislative increase on the teacher’s base salary.  Shane Frost seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.
