School Board Highlights

from the April 14, 2009 meeting of the Uintah School District Board of Education

 

 

Recognition of Transportation Employees:  A standing ovation was given to Todd Wilkins and Rick Perry, lead mechanics in the Transportation Department, after Joan Sheffer honored them for their hard work, dedication, and all they do for the district.

 

Recognition of Mimi Thomas – Art Teacher of the Year:  Lynna Kendall, District Arts Coordinator, congratulated Mimi Thomas who has been awarded the Elementary Art Teacher of the Year Award by the Utah Art Educators Association.  A standing ovation was also given by the audience and Board of Education members.

 

Recognition of DECA Finalists:  The Uintah High School DECA team recently attended the state competition and represented the district well.  Joleen Cottrell, Advisor, introduced the DECA finalists to the Board of Education members.

 

Demonstration by Uintah High School FFA Parliamentary Procedures Team:  The Board of Education had the opportunity to watch the FFA Parliamentary Procedures Team in action as team members demonstrated a mock club meeting.

 

Lapoint SIP Quarterly Report:  As part of the AYP requirement for Lapoint Elementary, a School Improvement Plan (SIP) must be submitted to the State quarterly after the report has been presented to the local Board of Education.  Principal Dennis Atkin reviewed some of highlights of the report with Board members.

 

Approval of Policy 005.5000 Reimbursement for Educational Expenses:  (1^st & 2^nd Reading)  A motion was made by Scott Ruppe to delete a section of the “Paraeducator” definition and approve the modification to Policy 005.5000 on first and second reading.  Allen Huber seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.

 

Approval of School Trust Land Plans:  A motion was made by Allen Huber to table approval of the School Trust Land Plans.  Scott Ruppe seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.

 

Approval of Piano Purchases @ Vernal Middle School:  A motion was made by JoAnn Cowan to approve $41,795 from the Recreation Funds to be used to purchase a Steinway Grand Piano and an upright piano which will be housed at the Vernal Middle School.  Scott Ruppe seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.  The Board of Education also directed Lynna Kendall to put together a committee to draft a policy to govern the use and care of the grand piano.

 

Approval of Property Purchase:  A motion was made by Scott Ruppe to approve the purchase of property to house the Alternative Education Program for Uintah School District at the agreed upon terms , and authorize Charlie Nelson, Superintendent, and Randy Upton, Business Administrator, to move ahead with negotiations.  Allen Huber seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.

 

Approval of FY 2009 Revenue Sweep:  A motion was made by Scott Ruppe to approve the sweeps of $641,753 as proposed, with flexibility given to carryover items.  Allen Huber seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.

 

FY 2010 Budget Adjustments:  Tabled.
